PP Homopolymer vs Copolymer: Which Grade Should You Choose?

Homopolymer, random copolymer or block copolymer - the right base PP grade depends on whether your part needs stiffness, impact strength or clarity.

PP Homopolymer vs Copolymer comparison - Siya Polymer

Homopolymer PP

Homopolymer PP is made purely from propylene monomer, giving it the highest stiffness, hardness and heat resistance of the three main PP types. It is the default choice where rigidity matters more than impact resistance in cold conditions, such as caps, closures, fibres and rigid packaging.

Random Copolymer PP

Random copolymer PP includes a small, evenly distributed amount of ethylene, which lowers the melting point and improves clarity and flexibility. It is widely used for transparent containers, medical components and thin-wall packaging where see-through appearance is important.

Block (Impact) Copolymer PP

Block copolymer PP contains larger ethylene-rich rubber phases dispersed within the PP matrix, dramatically improving low-temperature impact strength at some cost to stiffness. It is the standard choice for automotive parts, crates, appliance housings and anything that needs to survive drops or impacts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about PP Homopolymer vs Copolymer, answered by the Siya Polymer technical team.

Yes, block copolymer PP and impact copolymer PP refer to the same resin family, engineered with a rubber-rich ethylene-propylene phase for improved impact strength.

Random copolymer PP is generally preferred for transparent or semi-transparent packaging because of its lower crystallinity and better optical clarity.

Yes, homopolymer PP can be compounded with impact modifiers to improve toughness while retaining much of its stiffness advantage.

Yes, random copolymer typically processes at a slightly lower temperature than homopolymer due to its lower melting point, which can also reduce cycle time.
